Here goes another love story between a boy and his toys!
Within these pages you'll find the history, progress, and vision behind this Mitsubishi 3000gt VR-4. This car hails from the 90's era when the Japanese supercars outperformed the iconic American corvette. The big 4 were the Mazda RX-7 ('93-'95), Toyota Supra ('93-'98), Nissan 300zx ('90-'96), and longest selling of them all, the Mitsubishi 3000gt ('91-99). Two other models include the Honda NSX and Nissan Skyline... yet the NSX was at a distant price-point and the Skyline was never sold in the U.S.
This 3000gt started life as a 1992 VR-4 model... which graced it with features such as twin turbos, all-wheel drive, all-wheel, steering, electronically adjustable shocks, speed adaptive aerodynamics, and an exhaust note tuned with the push of a button. The collection of electronic wonders, while impressive, added complexities which many find unwieldy to handle over time. Also, the culmination of performance hardware resulted in a vehicle considered quite hefty in its time.
Now, this 3000gt is in the final stages of its restoration back to life with the updated components needed to fit in with today's crowd of performance cars. From larger turbos feeding a beefed-up engine... to updated body panels from the restyled '99 VR4 model... this blog tells the story of a modest resto-build done with love at the bargain price of only a few drops of blood, sweat, and tears.
